02/03/2007 Camp Dennison Gravel Pits Village of Indian Hill eastern Hamilton Co. (Delorme p. 75, C-5) The following is a report of the day's findings from about 2 pm - 3 pm. Strong winds make for difficult viewing, but nice views of all three rarities (i.e., Eurasian Wigeon, Long-tailed Duck and Bald Eagle) can still be had. I broke the report into two sections, birds found at the North pond at the AIM building, and those found in the south pond at the long-tailed duck location. Therefore, some species may be represented in both sections. North Pond at AIM building: Canada Geese - XX Gadwall - XX EURASIAN WIGEON - 1 beautiful drake at mingling with shovelers and American wigeons near the shoreline to the left as viewed from the parking lot of the AIM building as described in previous posts. Lifebird for me and two of three other birders braving the elements. [You will need to bundle up due to high winds and wind chills in the single digits or less, and need a scope to view this bird, although distance is reasonable for good views thru scope] Still present as of 2:30-2:45 pm. American Wigeon - XX Mallard - X Northern Shoveler - XX Canvasback - X Redhead - X Ring-necked Duck - XXX Bufflehead - XX Hooded Merganser - X Bald Eagle - 1 adult sometimes spooking ducks, perches in sycamore tree just south of AIM parking lot. I first found the eagle standing on the ice from the "frozen mud" parking lot described previously. Ring-billed Gull - XX American Robin - XX Northern Mockingbird - 1 South pond: Pied-billed Grebe - XX Canada Geese - XX Gadwall - X Ring-necked Duck - XX LONG-TAILED DUCK - 1 winter male seen without a scope at close range (only if one walks or drives down the gravel road into the area). Mixed with American Coots, Pied-billed Grebes and Ring-necked Ducks. In this area there are Ring-billed Gulls standing on the ice. The long-tail was diving frequently along the back edge of the coots where the water meets the ice. Still present as of 3 pm. Bufflehead - X Ruddy Duck - XX Bald Eagle - 1 (same individual as above) American Kestrel - 1 adult female American Coot - XX Ring-billed Gull - XX American Pipit - 3 flew up as I was walking back up the hill from the duck to the car.
