Today I saw a Tree Swallow fighting the gale over the prairie field below the Dam at C.J. Brown Reservoir near Springfield. I have seen them as early as mid-March there, but this one is certainly an adventurous individual. I also saw 2 Killdeer do a noisy flyover, a Red-winged Blackbird singing and flashing his epaulettes, and 2 Turkey Vultures tilting wildly in the cyclone today. There are some good ducks present in Buck Creek just below the dam and across the road at Old Reid Park. The big lake is still almost all frozen, with increasing open water at the north end.
