I led a field trip for the Black River Audubon Society at Lorain Harbor this morning (3/17). Conditions were miserable with a strong wind out of the north that made conditions for gull and duck watching excellent. there was a nice variety of ducks in the harbor. the best bird was a male COMMON GOLDENEYE x HOODED MERGANSER hybrid. It was hanging with a group of goldeneye just east of the sewage treatment plant. There were quite a few gulls around the best variety was sitting on the ice just south of the lighthouse. Again the best birds were hybrids. There were two GREAT BLACK-BACKED x HERRING GULL hybrids, a 2nd year bird and an adult. Other gulls of note were at least 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and at least 5 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Here is a list of birds seen: Horned Grebe Pied-billed grebe Double-crested cormorant Canada goose Mallard Green-winged teal Redhead Ring-necked duck Canvasback Greater scaup Lesser scaup Common goldeneye Common goldeneye x hooded merganser Bufflehead Hooded merganser Common merganser Red-breasted merganser Ruddy duck American coot Bonaparte's gull Ring-billed gull Herring gull Lesser black-backed gull Glaucous gull Great black-backed gull Great black-backed gull x herring gull John Pogacnik 4765 Lockwood Road Perry, OH 44081 440-259-2751 ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
