Hello again! From about 5 PM to 8:15 PM on Tuesday, I somewhat quickly scanned the following areas at Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area: along Washburn Road, Pond 27, Pond 3, Pond 33, the upground reservoir, the wetland/pond along east side of TH-108, and the Sportsmen's Center (at dusk). Birds observed and/or heard included the following: Bald Eagle- at least 5 (pair cavorting overhead south of Washburn, 3 cavorting overhead over Pond 27, later saw 3-4 individuals that may (or may not) have already been counted) Horned Lark- ~40-50 along Washburn Road Red-Tailed Hawk- 3 Horned Grebe- ~25-30 (Pond 27, Pond 3, and reservoir) (no time to try to pick out possible Eared Grebes) American Wigeon- ~700 on Pond 27 (truly was a sight taking off en masse, circling around, and landing back on pond) Redhead- ~175 (various ponds and reservoir) Ring-Necked Duck- ~320 (various ponds and reservoir) Gadwall- ~36 (Pond 27 and reservoir) Hooded Merganser-~30 (various ponds and reservoir) Pied-Billed Grebe- 7 Canvasback- 1 on Pond 27, ~26 on reservoir Northern Pintail- 1 pair on Pond 27, 7 on Pond 3 Trumpeter Swan- 2 on Pond 27 (eastern section) Tundra Swan- 144 on Pond 27 (western section) Black Duck- 4 on Pond 3 Kestrel- 1 Northern Shoveler- pair on Pond 3, 1 in wetland/pond along east side TH-108 Northern Harrier- 2 Bufflehead- 2 on Pond 3, 5 on Pond 33 Ruddy Duck- 5 on Pond 33 Wood Duck- pair on Pond 33 Common Loon- 1 on reservoir American Coot- 500+ at various ponds and reservoir Red-Breasted Merganser- ~35-40 on reservoir Common Goldeneye- 10 on reservoir Bonaparte's Gull- 2 at over reservoir Lesser Scaup- ~6 at Pond 27, 4 at Pond 3, 100+ on reservoir (no time to try to pick out any Greater) Green-Winged Teal- 1 male on Pond 33 Eastern Meadowlark- saw 14, heard several (mainly at new wetland on NE corner of TH-108 and CH-71) Turkey Vulture- at least 324 counted kettling together beyond reservoir, later at dusk saw 100+ roosting together in top of trees north of CH-77 and east of TH-108 Short-Eared Owl- 5 just west of Sportsmen's Center at ~8:10 PM, good views of one sitting in tree looking at me Red-Winged Blackbirds- 1000+ Great Blue Heron- 10 Common Grackle- 100+ Canada Geese, Mallards, Song Sparrows, Crows, Robins, Starlings, Ring-Billed Gulls, Flicker, Red-Bellied, Cormorant, and Mourning Doves I saw hundreds of waterfowl aflight in the distance at various areas in Killdeer. I also heard several Chorus Frogs and Spring Peepers. Directions to Killdeer can be found on the OOS and the ODNR web sites.
