Greetings----thanks to those responded about their local Carolina wrens! I had about 60 species today in eastern Mahoning Co., but no wrens. Let's hope it's just bad luck in my neighborhood. Waterfowl were pretty impressive today, especially at Pine L. Highlights there were: 17 tundra swans, wood ducks, n. pintails, Am. wigeons, Am. black ducks, n. shovelers, lesser scaups, ring-necked ducks, buffleheads, hooded mergs, red-breasted mergs, and pied-billed grebe. A few ruddy ducks were at Evans L. also. Around that area Am. coots, horned larks, and rusty blackbirds were found. In Coitsville Twp. 23 wild turkeys, 3 ring-necked pheasants, a handsome male n. harrier, sharp-shinned hawk, red-shouldered hawks, e. bluebirds, and a fox sparrow rounded out the afternoon. Song sparrows remain quite numerous locally. Pishing at the right spots can bring up half a dozen to one bush.
