This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for March 23, 2007. Compiler: Paul Gardner. This is a summary of noteworthy birds reported from Ohio in the previous week or so. Reports have been gleaned by the compiler from various internet sources, particularly Ohio-birds, The Ohio Birding Forum, the RareBird.org forums, Cincinnati Bird Sightings Log, Southwestern Ohio (Dayton) Rare Bird Alert, and from some individual observers who kindly share their knowledge. Questions, comments, complaints and additional noteworthy sightings not posted to one of the above may be sent to the compiler. (Review list species are sufficiently rare that details of any sighting can help increase our understanding of Ohio's bird life. CACKLING GOOSE: Found by Rick Asamoto on the 18th at St Marys Fish Hatchery (Auglaize County). Photos are at the OOS Forum. EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE: Michigan birder Dick Wolinski saw two birds at West Curtis Street at Santa Claus Trail (Lane?) in Stryker, Williams county on or about March 12. The birds could not be relocated on the 21st. Photographs, particularly of the diagnostic undertail coverts, are desired. Currently the only accepted Ohio record is of hunter-killed birds. LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE: A banded individual, presumably of the Ontario, Canada study population, was seen on the 19th in Adams Co. Locational information is being tightly held for now. SPOTTED TOWHEE: Last reported on Sunday March 18, at the feeder of Ms. Jan Dixon, 1948 Whitby Court, Holland, Lucas County. HARRIS' S SPARROW: Seen at least as late as the 17th at the property of Mr. Eli D. Miller, 3395 Township Rd. 406, Walnut Creek, Holmes County. The bird was seen by Pam Jordan at the eastern edge of the property near the compost area and under the feeder. Seasonal Highlights: PEREGRINE FALCONS are nesting in Cleveland. Migration continues apace: COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE, EARED GREBE, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, AMERICAN PIPIT, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and FOX SPARROW are widely reported. GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE: Lee Gruber reported four from the north beach of East Fork Reservoir on the 18th. EURASIAN WIGEON: This very rare migrant was spotted by Levi Yoder in front of the observation tower at Funk Bottoms WA on the 21st. SURF SCOTER: Widely distributed inland this week. On March 18, Jay Lehman found them at Miami Whitewater and at Spring Valley. John Kuenzli had one at Big Island WA on the 19th. Scott Albaugh saw them at the Ohio River Pike Island Lock and Dam near Yorkville, OH, and Rick Asamoto from Cowan Lake, both on the 20th. On the 21st Rob Thorne found ten at Alum Lake, Delaware County. WHITE-WINGED SCOTER: Seen at the Ohio River Pike Island Lock and Dam near Yorkville, OH on March 20 by Scott Albaugh. LONG-TAILED DUCK: Ethan Kistler found a female at Mosquito Lake, Trumbull Co. on the 18th. Su Synder reported a drake from Killbruck Marsh WA the same day that was still being seen at least through the 21st. Levi Yoder found a female at Wright Marsh on the 21st. AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN: On March 21, Casey Tucker had three at the north end of C.J. Brown Reservoir, Clark County. AMERICAN BITTERN: The Toledo Naturalist Association flushed one from some marsh vegetation just northeast of the north end of Stange Road, west of Ottawa NWR on the 19th. GREAT EGRET: One was reported on the 17th from the Ottawa NWR auto tour. Vic Fazio asks that sightings of great egrets be submitted to eBird (www.ebird.org) for a study of their spring migration patterns. OSPREY: Pairs have returned to nests at Rayland Marina, Rayland, Belmont County and to Pickerington Ponds Metropark, Franklin/Fairfield counties. LITTLE GULL: Lee Grover reported a single bird from the Dempsey Boat Launch on Sandusky Bay on March 20. ICELAND GULL: Leidy Gabe found one at Gordon Park, Cleveland, on the 18th. NORTHERN SHRIKE: The Brooks Bird Club of West Virginia found one at Egypt Valley Wildlife Area in Belmont County on the 19th. It was seen along County Road 100 about one mile north of U.S. Route 40. Across the state in Lorain County, Rita Schneider found an immature bird at Sandy Ridge Reservation in on the 20th. NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW: Don Morse reported on the 22nd that they had returned to New Richmond, Clermont County. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET: Steve Pelikan found one on the 22nd at Mt Airy Arboretum, Cincinnati. BROWN THRASHER: Seen by Mike Busam on the 17th at Gilmore Ponds Interpretive Preserve, Hamilton, OH.
