This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for March 30, 2007. Compiler: Paul Gardner. This is a summary of noteworthy birds reported from Ohio in the previous week or so. Reports have been gleaned by the compiler from various internet sources, particularly Ohio-birds, The Ohio Birding Forum, the RareBird.org forums, Cincinnati Bird Sightings Log, Southwestern Ohio (Dayton) Rare Bird Alert, and from some individual observers who kindly share their knowledge. Questions, comments, complaints and additional noteworthy sightings not posted to one of the above may be sent to the compiler. (Review list species are sufficiently rare that details of any sighting can help increase our understanding of Ohio's bird life. LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE: The banded Canadian bird in Adams Co. was last seen on the 27th. SPOTTED TOWHEE: Last reported on Friday March 23, at the feeder of Ms. Jan Dixon, 1948 Whitby Court, Holland, Lucas County. Seasonal Highlights: OSPREY have returned to their platforms. PEREGRINE FALCONS have eggs (and webcams) in Cleveland and Columbus, and GREAT HORNED OWLS have young. Shorebirds remain limited to KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEG, LESSER YELLOWLEG, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, WILSON SNIPE AND AMERICAN WOODCOCK. CHIPPING SPARROWS have become common and FOX SPARROWS are moving through in good numbers. BROWN THRASHER AND YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER were widely reported. Terns, swallows, and warblers are increasing in diversity, and the Magee Marsh Boardwalk has hosted its first warbler of 2007. AMERICAN BITTERN: One charmed the crowds at The Shreve Migration Sensation on the 25th near the intersection of SR 226 and Kistler Rd. Two flew in front of Joe Faulkner at the observation deck on Wright Rd at Pickerington Ponds Metropark on the 28th. John Habig had two at Caesar Creek SP on the 29th. EURASIAN WIGEON: Widely seen during the Shreve Migration Sensation along Rt. 95 in Funk Bottoms on the 25th. Relocated by Andy Newman the next day. SURF SCOTER: Nancy Anderson saw one on the 23rd at Sims Park, Euclid. WHITE-WINGED SCOTER: Rick Nirschl spotted one in Lake Erie at Metzger Marsh on the 27th. AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN: The birds reported last week at Buck Creek SP were relocated by the Dayton Audubon Society on the 25th. MERLIN: One graced the Blackbrook Audubon fieldtrip at Veteran's Park in Mentor on the 25th. John Kuenzli saw one at the Longbrake Wetlands, Hardin County on the 26th. SANDHILL CRANE: The Shreve Migration Sensation turned up 10 on the 25th in the Funk Bottoms/Killbuck/Wright Marsh area. Another eight were at Veteran's Park in Mentor on the same day. Christina Minch found two at Sandy Ridge on the 28th. ICELAND GULL: John Pogacnik had a fly-by along the lakeshore at North Perry, Lake Co. on the 25th. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL: Ditto CASPIAN TERN: Gene Stauffer saw an early arrival at Hoover Reservoir on the 28th. Bill Hull had one in Newton, OH on the 29th. PURPLE MARTIN: John Pogacnik saw one at Lakeview Park in Lorain on the 25th. Rob Lowry saw one at Glacier Ridge Metro Park just northwest of Columbus on the same day. NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW: Rob Thorne found one at the OSU Wetlands in Columbus on the 28th. CLIFF SWALLOW: On the 26th, Ethan Kistler saw them at West Branch State Park (Portage Co.) BARN SWALLOW: Steve Pelikan reported one at the Miami Whitewater wetlands on the 25th. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET: Margaret Bowman on the 25th found one at Black Hand Gorge, Licking County. Reported from the Magee Marsh Boardwalk as well. BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER: One was found this week in Adams County according to a second-hand report. YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER: One reported from the Magee Marsh Boardwalk on the 24th may be the Boardwalk's first warbler of 2007. YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER: David Fankhauser reported on the 29th that they had returned to the Nine Mile Creek Valley, Clermont Co. PROTHONOTARY WARBLER: Ransome Williams reported a male at Carriage Place Park on Restler Road (east of Sawmill Road, north of Bethel) in Columbus on the 29th. LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH: Arrived en masse this week, at least in the southern half of the state. Reported from Adams, Clermont, Hamilton, Fairfield, Guernsey, and Licking counties. HENSLOW'S SPARROW: Jason Larson found one singing at The Wilds, Muskingum County, along Zion Ridge road about midway between SR 146 and the cemetery. NOTE: There will likely be no Ohio Statewide report for April 6, as the compiler will be with the Columbus Avid Birders in Colorado.
