Greetings---pretty good birding in eastern Mahoning Co. today 3/31. A purple finch visited my feeder here in Poland Twp. this morning. Evans L. and Pine L. continue to attract waterbirds, including lesser scaups, ring-necked ducks, buffleheads, hooded mergs, red-breasted mergs, ruddy ducks, c. loons, horned & pied-billed grebes, Am. coots, and Bonaparte's gull. The Mill Creek Wildlife Preserve had gadwalls, n. shovelers, bald eagle, and n. harrier along with the usual suspects. Locally, n. flickers and e. phoebes have returned in good numbers; but tree swallows, e. towhees, swamp sparrows, e. meadowlarks, and even turkey vultures remain scarce. Carolina wrens are again rather common--I wonder if "floaters" (as Rob Harlan described in his recent column in The Ohio Cardinal) have moved into vacant territories.
