John Herman spotted a Red-throated Loon C~ 2:30 p.m. and called me to check it out. As of 3:20 p.m. today (4/15), there is an adult (total winter plumage) Red-throated Loon at Clear Fork Reservoir, Richland Co. Ohio. The bird is in with a flock of ~ 35 Common Loons (~ 70 scattered throughout reservoir). The Rt Loon is about 2/3 the size of its larger cousins. At 1st appearance the red-throat looks much like a short necked Western Grebe with its all white head below the eyes and breast and belly. Otherwise the plumage appears to be a light to medium gray including the narrow stripe up the back of its neck. The bill is much slimmer than a Common Loon and is held pointed above the horizontal. The bird is located along the north shore. just east of the Morrow County line but is only visible across the reservoir from picnic areas 2 & 3. A sturdy tripod holding at least a 20x scope (30 to 60 is much more satisfactory) is recommended. Other birds (not inclusive) per John Herman Cormorants ~ 400 Scaup 200 Bufflehead 2+ Horned & Pied-billed Grebes ~ 6-10 each Red-breasted Mergansers 50+ Sprinkling of Ring-bills and a few Bonaparte's Gulls.
