Hi all, This must be the day for extraordinary sightings! Bruce, I'd love to see your photos of the hybrid duck, and would encourage you to post them to the Ohio Birds Forum on the Ohio Ornithological Society website. To my knowledge, there are but two records EVER of Bufflehead hybridizing with any other species. One report stems from a wing returned by a hunter in Ontario, decades ago, that could only be analyzed as Bufflehead x Bucephala sp. (one of the goldeneyes, presumably). The other report is of an apparent Bufflehead x Hooded Merganser, as reported in American Birds 35:3 (1981). The latter was in Illinois, but throughout the article and even in the title, the author refers to the bird as "presumed" hybrid. There may be other records that I don't know about, but I'd say such a Bufflehead x Hooded Merganser combo would constitute an extraordinary find, and should be thoroughly documented.
