In a tree just inside the lot adjacent to mine, today one of the nuthatches did an impressive avian Dracula impression over a perceived threat from a gray squirrel. I saw the nuthatch on the tree just beneath the cavity entrance in a striking static pose with its wings spread (imagine the way Dracula extends his cape), and tail spread as well. In the nearest tree to that one, at that level about 3 feet away and on the farthest side, the squirrel was nonchalantly perched motionless on a limb. Apparently satisfied that its point was well taken, the nuthatch relaxed its pose and popped in the cavity to the nest. Kathy Mock Barberton, OH Summit Co.
