25 species of warblers were observed in the headlands beach state park/mentor lagoons area today. the highlights were a silent male connecticut warbler along the lower zimmerman trail, an influx of about 40 singing tennessee warblers, about a dozen blackburnian warblers, 50 spotted sandpipers on the beach and along the west breakwall, and a yellow-bellied flycatcher, again on lower zimmerman trail (note: lower zimmerman trail is a rather brushy and thorny weakly-defined path along the western edge of shipman pond below the actual zimmerman trail). other highlights of a very good day were a singing marsh wren in the brush along the south edge of the headlands dunes area, good numbers of swallows and martins feeding on the newly-hatched midges, and thirteen least sandpipers early along the beach. the least bittern of yesterday's headlands beach state park post was not observed today
