Hello all, It took a few days to put all the details together, but I finally have the final tally from our big day of Glen Helen birding on Saturday, May 5th. The prairie and edge habitat off Grinnell Road and the riparian woodland along Birch Creek were the clear hot spots. Birders found 80 species in the Glen, including two that hadn't previously been reported. We stayed honest with the count, so chipping sparrows seen across the street from the preserve were not counted. Other notable misses include Eastern bluebird and wild turkey, both of which I expected. A trio of sandhill cranes that flew over the Glen the previous day also did not earn a place on the list. Here's the complete list talied from all observers: Great blue heron Turkey vulture Canada goose (with young) Wood duck Mallard Cooper's hawk Red-shouldered hawk (nest found in large sycamore with downy young) Red-tailed hawk Ring-necked pheasant Solitary sandpiper Mourning dove Great horned owl (Adult seen; young birds heard but not seen) Barred owl Chimney swift Ruby-throated hummingbird Belted kingfisher Red-bellied woodpecker Downy woodpecker Hairy woodpecker Northern flicker Pileated woodpecker Eastern wood-pewee Acadian flycatcher Eastern phoebe Great-crested flycatcher White-eyed vireo Yellow-throated vireo Red-eyed vireo Blue jay American crow Tree swallow Northern rough winged swallow Barn swallow Carolina chicadee Tufted titmouse White-breasted nuthatch Brown creeper Carolina wren House wren Blue-gray gnatcacher (seen on nest) Ruby-crowned kinglet Swainson's thrush Wood thrush American robin Gray catbird Brown thrasher European starling Blue-winged warbler Nashville warbler Northern parula (not previously on list of Glen Helen birds, but probably an oversight) Yellow warbler Magnolia warbler Yellow-rumped warbler Black-throated green warbler Blackburnian warbler Yellow-throated warbler Bay-breasted warbler Black and white warbler American redstart Ovenbird Louisiana waterthrush Common yellowthroat Hooded warbler Scarlet tanager Eastern towhee Field sparrow Song sparrow Lincoln's sparrow (not previously on list of Glen Helen birds) Swamp sparrow White-throated sparrow Northern cardinal Rose-breasted grosbeak Indigo bunting Red-winged blackbird Common grackle Brown-headed cowbird Orchard oriole Baltimore oriole American goldfinch House sparrow -Nick ------------------------------------ Nick Boutis, Executive Director Glen Helen Ecology Institute 405 Corry St. Yellow Springs, OH 45387 [log in to unmask] 937-769-1908 Support the Glen!
