Discreet viewing is easiest now for the two yellow-crowned night-heron nests near the south end of Preston Road in Columbus. This morning the southernmost nest (right over the road) had two visible fledged young, with a sentinel adult; the nest to the north (over the west side of the road) had three young, still in pinfeathers, with another adult. I heard from local folks that they'd seen three young in each nest last week. So this is a great time for a visit to see this impressive species in the northernmost part of its range. Within as few as three weeks they'll have headed south. Hats off to local residents for welcoming these birds for the eleventh straight year. Turn south off Broad Street (exit from I-71 just north of downtown Cols) east of Alum Creek onto Preston, and go almost to the end, looking for obvious guano on the pavement.
