Dan Sanders, Ben Warner and myself were fortunate to see the Mississippi Kite this morning around 10:00 AM flying over the Brass Ring Golf Course in Hocking County. Ben first spotted the bird in flight and we had long decent looks at it. We saw the bird from the public road recommended by Bill Whan; we waited there for around 4 hours before it popped into view. The bird's white secondaries were obvious in flight. Visibility of the back was limited though and from I what I could tell, the tail appeared mostly dark. The bird fooled around with a thermal and was definitely buoyant except on a couple occasions when it gently swooped down - probably feeding. The first primary feather appeared short. We spoke with a golfer who was seen this peculiar bird at least 6 times, most apparent from 5:30 - 8:30 PM. I didn't ask him if he golfed much in the morning, but I had a feeling he did. He also stated that the spot where we were located was as good as any to see the bird. If you go for the bird, good luck and be patient. Astonishingly, Dan called it when he said, "lets stay in this spot until around 10:00 AM - it should start to warm up enough to see any raptors using thermals." Sure enough like clockwork at 10:00 AM - the bird appeared.
