Yesterday the two yellow-crowned night-heron nests in Columbus were crammed with young birds, five apiece. Five is the maximum number of eggs this species is known to lay. Last year the two nests produced six young. Cooper's hawks nesting less than a hundred yards away have apparently taken no toll. The adults are probably stressed to the max feeding this horde, and are harder to find. Some of the young appear already capable of flight, and a routine early July decampment is in the offing. A great year for this small colony, now in its eleventh year.
