Conducted the monthly census on Friday, June 15 with Pat Hayes and Sandy Tkach. Beautiful day and lots of birds. Temp started in mid fifties and we ended in mid-80's with clear skies and light north winds. This was the 10th year for the June census. The average number of species had been 59 but today we had 71 species, so the new June average is 60.6. 7 new species were added to the June list. Those were Red-breasted Merganser, Laughing Gull, 11 Bonaparte's Gulls, 2 Forster's Tern, Cerulean Warbler, and Black-and-white Warbler. Highlight birds were the adult Laughing Gull at the old Neumann ferry dock, 2 Least Flycatchers along the North Pond Trail, a calling Red-breasted Nuthatch in the North Quarry, a Veery along the North Pond Trail, a singing Blackpoll off Huntington Lane, A singing Cerulean Warbler near the school, and a singing Black-and-white Warbler along the North Pond Trail. A second singing Black-and-white Warbler was found in the North Quarry on Saturday. Friday night an adult Northern Saw-whet Owl was found at the site where one was calling in May. And one or two birds were heard calling at the Scheele Preserve Saturday afternoon.
