Monday, August 13, 2007, 8:15-8:45 a.m. and 5:35-6:40 p.m. Oakwood Park, Lorain Observer: Paula Lozano For more than a month I have spent time at Oakwood Park in Lorain, keeping track of a red-headed woodpecker nest I found in June. On Monday, July 16 at 12:45 p.m. I observed both adults feeding at least one unseen nestling. Finally, about 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8, and about the same time on Friday, August 10, I saw one nestling. Although I did not see the nestling this morning, Monday, August 13, I observed both adults actively feeding it. (This morning an eastern wood-pewee and white-breasted nuthatch were heard, and at least 4 eastern bluebirds and a half dozen chipping sparrows were seen in the immediate area of the nest tree.) Between 5:35-6:40 p.m. a red-tailed hawk was perched in the nest tree adjacent to the nest hole. Both adult woodpeckers spent the entire hour scolding the hawk, with crests raised, flying around the area and perching near the hawk. Only once did I see an adult go to the hole and look inside it.
