Hi all, They're starting to move. Early bird migrants like Yellow Warbler, American Redstart, and Northern Waterthrush are already heading south. Ohio gets tremendous numbers of migrant warblers, and they offer wonderful birding in fall. The peak of warbler migration along Lake Erie, which offers birding as good in fall as spring, is the second week of September. And that's when the Fall Warbler Symposium will be held - Sept. 8 & 9 to be exact. Hosted by the Ohio Ornithological Society, Black Swamp Bird Observatory, and Toledo Naturalists' Association, the conference will be based at Lakeside on the Marblehead Peninsula. An outstanding slate of speakers is a feature: Jon Dunn, Kenn Kaufman, Elliot Tramer, Bill Evans, and Victor Emanuel. Victor is founder of VENT Tours, which takes trips worldwide. Victor is Saturday evening keynote speaker, and that should be a treat. On Sunday, there will be field trips to the best birding locales along western Lake Erie, led by experienced birders. We should find huge numbers and variety; migratory hotspots can be dripping with birds the second weekend of September. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about a fascinating group of birds, in plumages that are often thought of as confusing.
