This evening I was taking the dog out and while walking by the hummingbird feeder on my front porch, a male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD flew in and hovered about 4 feet in front of my face. We were both a bit startled. It hovered there for about 10 seconds and then flew off. This was a little after 8:00. I sat back and watched for it to come back, but nothing came in other than several ruby-throated hummingbirds. I was not around most of the day so I don't know if it has been coming in regularly. I got great looks at the bird and was able to see the rufous back and underparts. It was in the shade so the throat just looked dark. If the bird comes back I will post more details. I have been getting large numbers of hummingbirds lately. Nearly all of my Baltimore and orchard orioles have moved on so the hummers don't have to share the feeders.
