Granger Avenue, Lakewood, Cuyahoga Co., 7:50 a.m. Observers: Paula Lozano & Lisa Sierk Cooper's Hawk - 2, adult & juvenile As I drove across the railroad tracks, the hawks appeared overhead, one veering out of sight to the right and one to the left crash landing in a tree behind Lisa's house. Luckily there wasn't any traffic and I was able to park, grab my binoculars and watch what appeared to be a juvenile Cooper's hawk as it tried to regain its footing. It did so momentarily before flapping its wings, completely losing its balance and tumbling downward before disappearing. At that point the other hawk reappeared, calling and following the juvenile. Oakwood Park, Lorain, Lorain County, 8:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 5:35 p.m. Observer: Paula Lozano Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1, juvenile, 8:30 a.m. This bird got my attention because it was hopping up and down on a low set of bleachers near the basketball court. It had a small fox squirrel trapped under the bleachers. As I slowed my car, the "sharpie" flew into a nearby tree before flying into the trees on the south side of the park. Red-tailed Hawk - 1, 8:30 a.m. & 1:00 p.m., appeared to be same hawk observed on Monday perched in woodpecker nest tree. Red-headed Woodpecker - 4, 2 adults and 2 nestlings; all three times I confirmed that there were at least two nestlings. On my last stop today I found a dead nestling in the road below the nest, with the adults feeding another nestling. Granger Avenue, Lakewood, Cuyahoga Co., 7:00-7:15 p.m. Observers: Paula Lozano & Jan Ranahan Canada Warbler - 1, juvenile, actively foraging in lilac and quince bushes by the back porch. Eastern Screech-Owl - 1, 9:45 p.m., heard only Observer: Paula Lozano (P.S. Non-Ohio sighting: At 7:30 p.m. CDT a "swarm" of nighthawks was feeding at treetop level at my sister's house on W. Deep Lake Road in Bayfield County, Wisconsin. They're coming!) _________________________________________________________________ Now you can see trouble…before he arrives http://newlivehotmail.com/?ocid=TXT_TAGHM_migration_HM_viral_protection_0507 ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
