As I was heading under the I-480 overpass, on Canal Rd. in Valley View this morning, I watched a Great Blue Heron cruising along, about 10 feet above the canal. Out of the sky, coming at him full- tilt-boogie was a Peregrine Falcon! Straight at the poor heron! The heron spotted her and made a jerky dive to the right and the falcon zipped past, turned with one wing tip on a dime and shot back while the heron shifted to the left and up a bit--craning its neck to see where the falcon was. It was like watching a stealth fighter attack a Boeing 747. The falcon just seemed to want to harass the heron, not eat him. it was probably a young one showing off for mom and dad. I later saw the two juvenile females in the evening on the way home. Nothing like stopping traffic to watch birds on the way to work, I say. Much of the honking I heard was not coming from geese.
