Sunday, August 19, 2007, 2:30-4:00 p.m. Hoagland-Blackstub Road Mosquito Wildlife Area, Trumbull County Weather: 59F, moderate rain, fog Observers: Henry Burton, Bob Finkelstein, Jerry and Marjorie Howard, Paula Lozano While scanning the mudflat to relocate the marbled godwits, a small gull-like bird caught my eye. Although the weather conditions and visibility were -- to say the least -- not good, some its field marks were visible using our scopes. The first one I noticed and called out was the dark "M" across both upperwings when the bird fluttered-up and flew short distances. Other field marks I noted were a dark stripe on top the head, a darkish area on the shoulders, and dark tail band. When it flew, we were able to relocate it by finding the smallest gull-like bird with a dark head marking. Species I considered were Little and Sabine's Gull and Black-legged Kittiwake. I settled on the Little Gull, the only one with a dark head marking.
