Jeff Grabmeier and I birded the boardwalk and the eastern shore this morning. The number of shorebirds is way down from last weekend, particularly at the boardwalk. Highlights were a juvenile Baird's Sandpiper off the boardwalk and a basic plumaged Wilson's Phalarope at the north end of Pelican Island. The bird was well-observed, and it is not the Red-necked Phalarope reported yesterday. While we were there, a very ratty molting Northern Harrier spooked the shorebirds, and we were never able to relocate the phalarope or most of the sandpipers. The juvenile Little Blue Heron remains at the boardwalk.
