This morning I was treated to the sight of a Common Nighthawk swooping in the air above my house as I was leaving for work about 8 am. I had also seen one the previous night while walking the dog, but this view was much better, with the morning sun bringing out all the details. I also made a short stop at Hoover Reservoir about 4pm yesterday. Not much shorebird action was going on at the boardwalk, where about 400 geese had congregated, along with some Mallards and Blue-winged Teal. Most numerous shorebird was Killdeer, I estimate about 150 or so. I had one Semipalmated Plover and a distant yellowlegs species, plus some peeps that were too far out in cruddy light conditions for me to ID. One reason perhaps shorebird density and diversity was down may have been the juvenile Cooper's Hawk that was sitting on the mudflats, although Killdeer were foraging within 20 feet of the bird. Numerous Great Blue Herons and up to five Great Egrets were also present. I made a drive by of Oxbow road - not much going on there, with some Killdeer and a Greater Yellowlegs present, and a single Green Heron. Andrew R.
