Hello! From about 5:10 to 6:25 PM this past Saturday evening (9/8/07), I stood in one spot and observed the following shorebirds along the western mudflats of Hoover Reservoir as accessed from Wiese Rd.: Red Knot-1 across the narrow stretch of water from the western shore Buff-Breasted Sandpiper-2 (1 walked to within 20 feet of me for unbelievable views!) Baird's Sandpiper-4 (feeding with a Buff-Breasted and several peeps) Short-Billed Dowitcher-10 Semipalmated Plover-13+ Pectoral Sandpiper-10+ Least Sandpiper-many Semipalmated Sandpiper-many Killdeer-many Lesser Yellowlegs-20+ Greater Yellowlegs-2+ Stilt Sandpiper-4 Spotted Sandpiper As the storm front approached the area around 6 PM, the winds significantly picked up and I happened to see a bird flying fairly low above me along with the wind out of the corner of my eye. I looked up to see one of about 40 Nighthawks dipping, twirling, diving, and soaring along with the wind. A few minutes later, another flock of 16 flew through, and another flock of 25 came through in advance of the front a few minutes after that (for a total of 80+). I assume that there were several juveniles within the flocks based on their slightly smaller size. I did not have time to move south along the shore to view other birds as hoped because of the impending storm. Other notable birds observed included: Great Egrets-9 Green-Winged Teal-some Northern Shoveler-several Black Duck-a few Kingfisher Caspian Tern Hoover Reservoir is in southern Delaware County, and directions to the Wiese Road access area is found on the OOS web site.
