A quick trip to Hoover Reservoir late this afternoon turned up little of note. Mudflats and water near the boardwalk were nearly empty except for a few killdeer (and even their numbers are way down), the usual Canada geese, a couple of mallards, and scattered great blue herons and great egrets. Three lesser yellowlegs were feeding under the Galena Rd bridge north of the boardwalk. The mudflats near Weise Rd held perhaps fifteen least and four semipalmated sandpipers. The bird of note here was a single WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, apparently a juvenile. A couple of drying cormorants and a few ring-billed gulls in desultory flight completed the picture. Hoover Meadows had few surprises other than a small, flock of cedar waxwings; a few bluebirds were about, along with plenty of blue jays and goldfinches and a pair of empidonax flycatchers a little too far away to identify. However, the meadows were stunningly beautiful in the late afternoon sun; the scene alone was enough to make the visit worthwhile. -- Bill Heck ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
