Hi all, When I had a chance to start filtering through the photos that I took this weekend and got to the phalarope that I posted yesterday from Lawrence County, I quickly realized that it was a RED PHALAROPE when I blew them up a bit. Sorry about that; should have made an effort to study it more closely at the time and not just made any sort of assumption that it was the more likely Red-necked Phalarope. Red Phalarope is always a rarity in Ohio and major rare in early September. Records along the Ohio River are essentially unknown. Peterjohn in Birds of Ohio cites only one record in unglaciated Ohio, from Jefferson County in 1945. As noted yesterday, this bird was at Lock 27 Dam boat launch in Lawrence County, which is on the Ohio River and about 1.8 miles north of Rome on Route 7. It was still there when I left around 3:30 pm. If anyone is around there it would certainly be worth a look. Photos and more of a description can be seen on my blog.
