It's not even a review species (requiring documentation to add to official records), but Sabine's gull is a tough species to see in Ohio if you don't live near Lake Erie. Breeding in the High Arctic, they winter in the southern hemisphere, and they are usually in a hurry when, as inexperienced juveniles, they pass through here in fall. But one has spent Tuesday, yesterday, and today at the state fish hatchery on the east shore of Grand Lake St. Mary's. Today the bird was cruising the longer impoundments on the east side from 8 am to 3 pm, but occasionally resting on a dike on the west side of the hatchery. Three days at an inland site in Ohio may be a unique record for the state for Sabine's. If you've wanted to see this attractive species in the state, go today, or take your chances tomorrow. Sunset today is at 7:21 pm. Bill Whan Columbus ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
