I had a business trip to Mansfield last week, and one of my business associates that came in from Illinois is an avid birder, so we made the best of the situation by doing some birding at Mohican State Park on Friday morning (October 5th). We had a warbler fallout that was incredible in terms of numbers of birds but not so in terms of species diversity. We had literally of hundreds of warblers everywhere we looked, but most were Yellow Rumped and Palm. We also saw Blackburnian, Black Throated Green, Chestnut Sided, and Common Yellowthroat in much smaller numbers. I had a great morning until I got a bee in my shirt, and in my haste to get the shirt off so that the stinging would stop, my binoculars got dropped and destroyed. Nevertheless, the sheer numbers of warblers around and the perfect weather made for a great day. Now I've got a good excuse to go out and buy that pair of 10 X 42 binocs that I've been wanting for a while, and I think my colleague enjoyed watching me dance around like a crazed lunatic, so a good time was had by all, except for the bee, who is no longer among us.
