While checking out the mud banks from the favored fisherman's spot near the Haynes boat ramp in the northern end of Caesar Creek Lake, I was surprised to come across five foraging Lapland Longspurs. They were at extreme range and would have been unidentifiable if the light hadn't enabled use of about 40x on my scope. At least one of the birds was an adult male in definitive basic plumage. The most noticeable field marks were big rufous greater coverts, the remains of a black bib and clearly streaked sides. At least two of the birds were in first basic plumage, rather washed-out looking compared to the adult, but with buffy underparts. Other notable birds were a Dark-eyed Junco, a Semipalmeated Plover, and a Dunlin.
