Stuck close to Columbus, I tried to see if some of the recent temperate migrant wave of sparrows & late warblers had washed into this urban corridor in north-central Columbus. I birded from the King Ave dam north through the OSU wetland to Whetstone Park, and had good diversity of migrants. Highlights included -sapsuckers at several locations -hermit thrush at Whetstone -cedar waxwings at OSU Wetland -house wrens at several spots -abundant Yellow-rumped warblers -a sweep of the eastern Vermivora warblers - Tennessee, Nashville, Orange-crowned - at Whetstone, all around the planted prairie there. This is a very reliable spot for the latter two; the Tenn was just a bonus. All were low, feeding around the heads of the asters and prairie plants. -lots of White-throated Sparrows at all stops, and White-cronws at OSU wetland -good #s of Swamp sparrows, led by 8 at the OSU wetland -fewer of other sparrows, with Fox at OSU wetland and Chipping at Whetstone the most unusual -plenty of Redwing blackbirds, often in high flocks flying south -a big pile of Goldfinches hanging around the Whetstone prairie, perhaps 200+ ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
