Late yesterday afternoon, a northern shrike was discovered along Lake Rd in the Bradstreet Landing area of Rocky River http://www.ohiobirds.org/birdingsites/showsite.php?Site_ID=103 , a neat urban record. I should add that predictions of unusual incursions of northern birds seem to be holding up at this early date. In Ohio, Lake Erie presents a barrier (except in our NW), but to our east and west increased (though not spectacular) numbers of evening grosbeaks are being reported, and Bohemian waxwings, pine grosbeaks, etc. seem to be trickling in on a rather early schedule. There were even excited reports of gray jays (!); I would not count on this one, as research indicates they are retreating north with warming temperatures: they rely on cold weather to preserve cached nuts, and their food is rotting at the southern limits of the range. Still well-preserved in Columbus, Bill Whan ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
