We went up to Headlands yesterday in hopes of spotting the saw whet owl but once we got there we realized we didn't really know much about where to look (except that it has been seen on the breakwater). Needless to say, although we walked the breakwater and gave it our best shot, we didn't see it. I believe I read to look for them in dense, tangled areas -- but beyond that, I'm wondering: -how high (or low) should we be looking? -do they have favorite plants for roosting? -are they in bushes or mainly on tree limbs? -do they tend to stay in protected spots (ie, not on the breakwater past where the plants start breaking up and there aren't as many tangles) or does the wind not make a difference? Any other clues would be greatly appreciated. I know it's always a gamble but I'd like to have a better idea of what I'm doing -- I would love to spend a few minutes looking at one of these birds!
