On the way back from a successful viewing of the pine grossbeak at Oak Openings yesterday, we stopped at Killdeer Plains and saw about a dozen tundra swans flying to the east. If it weren't for the steady calling, we might have just written them off as more geese, but their call was very distinctive. Some duck hunters mentioned that they had seen hundreds and hundreds of snow geese also fly over, but very high and they didn't stop. Parts of the refuge were closed off. If anyone knows whether this is just for hunting season, or something more permanent, it might be of interest to me and other readers. We got there too late for the shrike, but did see harriers, pheasants and short eared owls. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
