Yesterday, a warm wind was blowing out of the south, and with spring peepers and various insects making noises, it seemed more like April than November. Even after several good frosts, some bugs are still around. There was a very large flock of robins working their way through my woods. Some were singing softly, and I heard other non-robin thrush noises in the mix too. There were about 6-10 bluebirds in with them and they were calling as well. It was clear everyone was having a good time feeding on dogwood berries. The best bird of the day was a very nice juvenile Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker which flew in to a tree next to one of the suet feeders. It watched with interest as the nuthatches and timice took turns on the suet, but never joined them. It was content to peck around on an old aspen trunk that all the woodpeckers seem to like. This was the best long easy look I have had of a sapsucker in a long time and I think the first juvenile I have ever seen in Ohio. Still waiting for the first Pine Siskin to show up....... Looks like the warm weather will end after today, so the peepers will have to hunker down.
