Inspired by Jim McCormac's advice, I mustered the interns and four of us looked in 250 red cedar (juniper) trees and a few grape vine tangles in and around the old fields of the "Kamelands" in Highlands Nature Sanctuary. We found zero saw-whet owls. It began snowing and turned windy cold and we lost motivation. No other Canadians except a purple finch and some juncos were sighted this morning. Being out in the first snow was exhilarating, however.
