This morning a Rufous Hummingbird was banded and positively identified near the Hartwell/Wyoming area of Springfield Twp. It was an adult female. The location was not too far from Cross County HWY at about 689 ft elevation but not at the highest point in the area. The feeder is in a small subdivision surrounded by "Suburbia" on two sides and a large wooded area on the other two. A single bird feeder had a repeat visitor causing the homeowner to not take it down on Oct. 30 as she does every year. The bird has apparently been feeding since the end of October. Another "accidental" discovery!!! You never know where they'll show up ... rarely where you would expect! It was very healthy and was feeding within 15 minutes after being released. A photo of the bird and some i.d. characteristics close-up photos can be seen at www.tolford.com/birdband/Hummingbirds.htm.
