I checked the Clear Fork Reservoir just west of Lexington (City of Mansfield) this morning (24 December 2007), viewed from Rt. 97 along the south edge of the reservoir. The highlight was a pair of female-type WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, as well as a flock of 20 Ring-necked Ducks, 4 Lesser Scaup, 5 Redhead, and 25 American Coots. Last year around this time (December 2006) I had a good number of diving and dabbling ducks on this reservoir, including 2 Surf Scoters, American Wigeon, Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked Duck, both scaup, Redhead, Common Goldeneye, and Common and Hooded mergansers, as well as a Great Egret in the swampy area on the north side. I'm not from the area, but this seems like a nice spot for winter waterfowl. Good birding, Jay McGowan Ithaca, NY ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
