I met Rob Royse today (January 4, 2008) at E. 72nd Street from 2 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. In addition to Ben Fambrough, Ted Gillian and a nice group of Columbus birders and were also present. We saw a Bald Eagle come in and get what appeared to be a fish. Also a beautiful light morph Rough-legged Hawk (Ted Gillian spotted it) flew over. At the Cleveland Electric Building (with the painting of the Whale), I saw a Peregrine Falcon chasing Bonaparte's Gulls. Interesting seeing the gulls reactions to the three different species of raptors. The Bald Eagle really set off the entire massive cloud of thousands of large gulls from the entire area visible from E. 72nd street. An apparent Herring x Great Black-backed Gull was also present. Photos are not of high quality. The bird looked very similar to one reported in mid December. Size was between Herring and GBBG. Back was a gray darker than Herring, but lighter than GBBG. Ben said he saw pinkish legs. Gonys was dark. Temperatures were near freezing, but the wind was down and the sun peeked through parting clouds for wonderful illumination. At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame there were many Ring-billed Gulls and Scaup sp. present. I added a video of a Little Gull sighting from 2006 at East 72nd Street and generally tried to tidy up my gull page. As the photos increase I hope to break it down to groups. http://web.mac.com/proctos/iWeb/Site/Birds-Gulls.html Great day for Gulls in NE Ohio.
