Even with hunting season in full swing, I decided to see if anything had found a bullet-free place on the water this morning. One group of dabbling ducks had managed to do so, but the divers - few in number - were more interesting. Canada Goose - numerous fly-over groups than didn't settle in; one contained a much smaller dark goose, possibly a Cackling, but I could never find it on the ground. Am. Black Duck - 50-100 Mallard - 600-800 Northern Pintail - 10-20 Gadwall - 1 noted Am. Wigeon - a few LONG-TAILED DUCK - 1 (female) Common Goldeneye - 1 Hooded Merganser - 3 Great Blue Heron - 2 Black Vulture - 3 Ring-billed Gull - 200+ Herring Gull & Bonaparte's Gull - small numbers I have noticed many geese on the Island Road quarries near Circleville; today they were gone by the time I got there (12:30). Has anyone been watching this area? It's been good in the past for oddities.
