I made a quick stop by East 72nd Street at about 2 this afternoon (January 3). Ring-Billed and Herring Gulls were there in superabundance. Great Black-Backed Gulls were also numerous, and I managed to spot 2 Lesser Black-Backed in a quick survey. Another birder pointed out one adult Glaucous Gull present fairly close to shore near the west end of the parking area. She also spotted an adult Bald Eagle making a high fly by, which and got all the gulls into an uproar, and a flock of 10 swans high overhead. The swans were a quick pass, and I won't venture a guess as to species. As I drove along the access road between Burke Lakefront and the shoreway, an American Kestrel went after a mouse at the edge of the road. I haven't seen the kestrels at the airport in a couple of weeks, so it was nice to see one.
