I stopped by Szalay's cornfields at the Towpath Trail at Bolanz Rd. today on my lunch break. There is a good flock of blackbirds there feeding on the waste corn, including one Rusty Blackbird and one Common Grackle. List follows: Towpath Trail at Bolanz Rd. parking lot I. MAMMALS: 1 SPECIES. 1. Eastern Gray Squirrel - 4 (1 black phase) II. BIRDS: 16 SPECIES. 1. Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 (calling at Furnace Run) 2. Mourning Dove - 110+ (3 separate flocks - also 3 separate piles of dove feathers between trail and cornfield, a Cooper's must be feeding well) 3. Red-bellied Woodpecker - 1 4. Blue Jay - 2 5. American Crow - 90+ 6. Black-capped Chickadee - 2 7. Red-winged Blackbird - 70+ (mostly males) 8. Rusty Blackbird - 1 9. Common Grackle - 1 10. Brown-headed Cowbird - at least 2 dozen 11. European Starling - 20+ in with the blackbirds 12. Northern Cardinal - 9 (4m,5f) 13. Song Sparrow - 1 14. White-throated Sparrow - 3 15. American Goldfinch - 1 16. House Sparrow - 30+ Towpath Beaver Pond - from Riverview Rd. 1. Canada Goose - 19 2. Mallard - 3 (2m,1f) 3. Belted Kingfisher - 1 (m) Also 2 Midland Painted Turtles out on a log - crazy weather!
