Compiler: Paul Gardner. Email: [log in to unmask] SPECIES IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW-LIST SPECIES. Details of these sightings are desired by The Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification for submitting your data. For details and pointers see: http://www.ohiobirds.org/records/documentation.php Long-tailed Duck: Two were seen in the harbor at South Bass Island on the 29th. Ruffed Grouse: The report of the December 30th Cincinnati CBC stated that two were found this year. Red-throated Loon: John Pogacnik reported an immature bird in the Lake Erie backyard of his North Perry, Lake County, home on the 1st. NORTHERN GANNET: The immature bird was reported by multiple observers at East 72nd Street, Cleveland, on the 28th and 29th. No reports of it there since. Probably not coincidentally, on the 30th an immature gannet was seen flying over Sandusky County near Fremont by Greg Links and his CBC teammates. Golden Eagle: Lou Gardella reported that on the 31st an immature bird was flying near Prouty and Rural Dale Roads in The Wilds/AEP Rec Lands area of Muskingum County. CALIFORNIA GULL: On the 30th at East 72nd St, Cleveland, John Pogacnik got a too-quick look at what might have been a 2nd winter bird. Thayer's Gull: On the 30th Chris Spagnoli saw an adult at East 72nd Street, Cleveland. Iceland Gull: A first winter bird continued to be reported from E. 72nd Street, Cleveland, through the 30th. Barn Owl: Jason Larson reported his "Big January" team saw one near Berlin, Holmes County, on New Year's Day. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD: The male visiting a heated feeder in Bluffton, Allen County, remains through the 3rd. Birders are welcome. Linda Houshower, the homeowner, provided these directions: Bluffton is off I- 75, 18 miles north of Lima or south of Findlay. Take either Bluffton exit, east on Main St. to the Fire station on one corner, and East of Chicago on the other corner, the street is Washington. Turn left (north), 3 stop signs (Jackson, Lawn, Spring), the house is a tall brown with red roof on the right, where the street dead ends. Park on the side of the street or at the dead end. Come up the sidewalk towards the house, can't miss the feeders and activity. Northern Shrike: On the 30th and 31st, one was reported along I-75 in the Findlay, Hancock County, area from just north of the rest stop south of Findlay to just north of mile marker 154. Matt Anderson reported one from "a couple of hundred yards northeast of the intersection of Wilkins and Monclova Roads" in the Oak Openings Region, Lucas County, on the 1st. Yellow-headed Blackbird: The Toledo CBC turned one up along Norden road just south of Maumee Bay State Park, Lucas County, on the 28th. Brewer's Blackbird: On the 1st, Doreene Linzell's Kingston CBC team found one along Kingston-Adelphi Rd (formerly County Line Rd) between Whisler Rd. and Bowsher Rd. in Pickaway County. PINE GROSBEAK: The last positive report from Obee Rd was on the 21st. Matt Anderson had one fly over near Girdham Road and the bike trail in Oak Openings Metropark on the 3rd. Red Crossbill: Chris Spagnoli reported a small group flew over East 72nd St, Cleveland, on the 30th. White-winged Crossbill: The bird visiting John Pogacnik's feeder in North Perry, Lake County, was last reported on the 1st. Common Redpoll: Widely reported, mostly across the northern half of the state. Reports from publicly accessible places include Westlawn Cemetery, Toledo, on the 29th and the Brown Trail at Swan Creek MetroPark, Lucas County, on the 31st. Ethan Kistler has produced a very useful map showing the Ohio counties from which redpolls have been reported. It is in the "Ohio Statewide" Forum at www.rarebird.org. The current count is 33 counties. Evening Grosbeak: A small flock is still being seen along the Wabash Cannonball trail in the Oak Openings region, Lucas County, through the 3rd. Jan Dixon reports that her photographs show one of the birds to be banded. There is a parking area for the trail on Rt. 64 just south of Monclova Rd. From here it is about a 10 minute walk westward along the trail. The birds frequent the trees in the area with canoes south of the trail and a "For Sale" sign on the north side. Birders have NOT been invited onto the private property here. The grosbeaks are apparently much more likely to be seen prior to 9:30 AM than later in the day. - End Transcript Paul Gardner Columbus, OH ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
