Two free lectures associated with the OSU Museum Open House on 16 Feb will be offered on campus to the general public, both by eminent ecologist Daniel Simberloff, whose work with invasive species (this year's open house theme) is of special interest. On 8 February at 7 pm at Independence Hall 100, Simberloff will speak on "Biological invasions: A global threat, but a winnable war." One stated aspect of his work that interests me involves critiques of biological controls gone awry--including introduced species, lethal controls of native species, etc., one presumes. That afternoon he'll examine "Birds of the Solomon Islands: the domain of the equilibrium theory of island biogeography and community assembly rules" at 4 pm in Room 1 of Jennings Hall. Dr. Simberloff's statistical analyses have called into question the assumption that interspecific competition is the most important factor in the development of biological communities. Maps of the campus are on the Web at http://www.osu.edu/map/ . Parking is a lot less painful after dark, when the larger public and less technical talk is to take place.
