The day brought several first-of-season birds to our Pataskala yard: a catbird, a female rose-breasted grosbeak, and a singing blue-winged warbler. I rarely have white-throated sparrows in the yard, but a pair has been here for a week. A pileated woodpecker has been calling hour after hour for four straight days. Pileateds have nested in our woods since we moved in 9 years ago, and I don't recall uninterrupted calling for such an extended length of time. There has been no answer; I assume his mate did not survive migration. I haven't seen a red-breasted nuthatch since April 16. At one point during the winter there were at least nine in our yard, and one would occasionally land on my arm as I filled the feeders. What a delight! I thought I heard one two days ago, but it was just a blue jay mimicking it. The last of the juncos also departed on April 16.
