It appears that the "wintering" Merlin have gone to the breeding grounds.
After observing the Red-tailed Hawk in the nest and a Flicker peering out of a
nest hole I was headed home, but was slow in making my way out of the
cemetery looking for Screech Owls when I observed a female Merlin in Section 40.
This is on the westside of the cemetery. After watching her for a minute or two
she flew off and I watched her catch a bird (my first observation of this).
She flew back to the tree and began eating. I got the scope out and saw that
it wasn't a bird she was eating, it was a BAT!!!!!
I have heard of them eating dragonflies before but a bat????
