I am informed by local residents that three yellow-crowned night-herons
have returned to eastern Columbus, for the 12th consecutive year. They
weren't there when I checked on Sunday; I was a bit worried, because
they usually show up a week earlier than this. Three is a typical
number, as the first arrival is often composed of two mature adults and
a second-spring bird. Last year two nests produced the maximum ten young.
