Yesterday, I did some quick birding at Olentangy Wetlands followed by some birding at Antrim Park just a few miles upstream from the OSU campus. The wetlands did not have any rarities or warblers present, just the common species, ditto for Antrim Park. The common species observed at Antrim, though, were a little more interesting, with 2 male Common Mergansers and 1 male Horned Grebe present. It took a while to get a positive ID on the grebe, as it was ducking under water quite often and resurfacing about 50 feet away from its dive point. It was still in its winter plumage. An Eastern Wood Peewee was calling this morning from its perch. Earlier in the week while at a store, there was a documentary on one of the big screen tv's about a 500+ strong school of dolphins pursuing a just located school of mackerels. But the problem for the dolphins was that a large flock of shearwaters had also located it as well. Then it showed the shearwaters diving down once the dolphins had forced the school of countless mackerel closer to the surface. It also mentioned that the shearwaters can dive as deep as 60 meters to feast on its prey. Just thought it was interesting. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
