I spent a few hours this morning visiting the Whittier peninsula and Berliner Park. Both places had a fair crop of early temperate migrants, but waterbirds were scant due to the high & fast river. Highlights included Great Egrets - 2 were in the bay off the boat launch at Whittier, while another was along the river in Berliner Cormorants - small numbers all along the river Osprey - a pair was soaring over Berliner park. Perhaps we need a platform somewhere along the river here. woodpeckers - 4 sapsuckers and 6+ flickers were scattered along the riparian zone, mostly in Whittier. swallows - small numbers of Tree Swallows over the river above the dam, along with a few Rough-winged and Barn. No Cliff swallows have returned yet to the I-70 bridge colony. Brown Creepers - 2-3 were actively foraging along the bikepath in Berliner Wrens - no House Wrens, but a Winter Wren was still lurking in Berliner park, and Carolina pairs were prospecting for territories in both parks. Kinglets - almost all Ruby-crowned, with perhaps 8-9 total Hermit Thrushes - 2 were along the bike path at Whittier Brown Thrasher - 1 was singing and another was lurking along the bike path at Whittier Sparrows - still small flocks of White-throats present, along with a few Chipping and Field sparrows. The birds were definitely scattered along the bikepath both above and below Greenlawn dam. The Whittier is starting to look like a real construction zone now, with huge piles of fill and large pieces of equipment. Apparently, ground-breaking for the new Audubon Center is coming up quickly. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
